Fiona Perks first appears as a red-headed girl in Manor Road School whom Polly Whittacker doesn't much like. Polly is thus not very happy when she finds that she must (in a school play) pretend to be in love with the character Fiona is playing. After the play is over, though, Fiona begins to grow on her, and eventually they become friends. Friends so good, in fact, that by the last third of the novel, they are planning to share a flat together in university. And Fiona turns out to be observant and attuned to the feelings of others, which qualities turn out to be one of the keys to helping Polly uncover a set of memories that are otherwise hidden from her for many years of her young life. So we like Fiona. She is one of the good people.
